Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. Announces New Mideast and Southeast Organization Structure

RALEIGH, North Carolina (October 17, 2006) - Stephen P. Zelnak, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. (NYSE:MLM), today announced the realignment of its Mideast and Southeast United States aggregates operations into four operating divisions under the leadership of Dan Shephard (48), Executive Vice President in the Mideast, and Phil Sipling (59), Executive Vice President in the Southeast. The change in organizational structure is designed to take advantage of growth opportunities throughout the region. Shephard and Sipling report to Ward Nye, President and Chief Operating Officer. The Company also announced the appointment of Presidents over the operating divisions.

Mideast Organizational Structure
John Tiberi (42) has been named President of the new Mideast Division. In this new role, he will be responsible for operations in Indiana, Ohio, Northern Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia. Tiberi has 20 years of industry experience and joined Martin Marietta in 2002. He served most recently as Regional Vice President/General Manager of the MidAmerica Region, consisting of the Company's operations in Indiana and Southwest Ohio. Tiberi holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Business Administration degree from Drucker Graduate School of Management at the Claremont Graduate University.

R. Dean Hardy (56) has been named President of the Carolina Division. Hardy started his career with Martin Marietta in 1972 and has held positions of increasing responsibility, most recently as Vice President/General Manager of the Greensboro District. He will be responsible for operations in North Carolina and two locations in South Carolina. Hardy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from North Carolina State University.

Southeast Organizational Structure
Jay Moreau (40) has been named President of the South Central Division. Moreau has been with the Company for 18 years, most recently as Regional Vice President/General Manager of the South Central Region. He will be responsible for operations in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois and the Florida panhandle, as well as offshore facilities in the Bahamas and Nova Scotia. Moreau holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing/Pre-Law from Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.

Keith Hedrick (61) has been named President of the Southeast Division. In this new role, he will be responsible for operations in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Hedrick started his career with Martin Marietta in 1968 and has held positions of increasing responsibility, most recently as Regional Vice President/General Manager of the South Atlantic Region.

Martin Marietta is the nation's second largest producer of construction aggregates, a leading producer of magnesia-based chemical products, and is developing structural composites products for use in a wide variety of industries.
